Ultane Strategy

Ultane is the last boss in Grim Awakening.

Although he is not as much of a gear check as Salvarola and his mechanics don’t sound so bad, he will still stop most people in their tracks.

Ultane requires 500 toughness and 520 hit. It says 500 hit needed for T2 raids if you check the tooltip but people are missing with only 500 hit.

Health: 27.400.000

Enrage timer: 8 minutes

Difficulty: medium is you can dodge stuff

Must have ability: none

Raid Setup

2 tank: any class will do, but having a Cleric tank always help. Also Rogue tanks and insane when it comes to cooldowns so the best combo will be Cleric – Rogue.

3 healers: Purifier, Chloro, Defiler is the healing setup you want to be using on this fight.

2 support: I suggest using an Archon/Pyro for max dps and a Bard/Tact.

3 DPS: being melee helps out with cleaving down the Lava Spitters, but you need to be extra careful with dodging the waves and not stepping out of the circles. If you can handle the mechanics go melee, if not, ranged it is.

Ultane Strategy

This fights consists out of 2 alternating phases. Boss phase and add phase.

Boss Phase

Note: Ultane doesn’t cleave ! As mean as he looks, he didn’t learn how to own multiple people with 1 hit. Face him whichever way you want.

While Ultane is active he will use the following abilities:

  • Healing debuff on the tank: swap at 3 stacks and then whenever the stacks drop off (20 seconds duration). Each stack reduces healing taken by 10%.
  • Infernal Radiance: 3 seconds channel on a raid member. While channeling it deals heavy damage. Make sure you give that person a shield and a heal/cooldown.
  • Mark of the Doomed: after Infernal Radiance channel ends a yellow circle will spawn around the player that was focused (looks like the Inquisitor Circle of Oblivion). If you are inside the circle and you step out you will deal 15.000 damage to the raid and debuff them with a 10% increased damage taken (lasts 30 seconds, stacks). If you are inside a circle stand still ! If you are on the edge of the circle run inside to avoid debuffing the raid. Sometimes the debuff will trigger if you are exactly on the edge of the circle when it spawns you might debuff the raid instantly. If the person being focused by Infernal Radiance dies, the circle will still spawn. Combat ressing that person before the circle despawns will also trigger the debuff.
  • Conjured Conflagration: 2 seconds cast, deals 11k damage to the raid and leaves a 10 seconds dot on the raid (ticks for 3.5k damage). Each Conjured Conflagration also spawns a Lava Spitter. This ability occurs every 45 seconds.
  • Soul Shackle: at 75% Ultane will link 2 people together with a green beam. They have to run to each other within 3 seconds. The longer the beam is up the more damage will deal when broken. If the debuff runs out and the beam breaks on it’s own the raid will take massive damage.
  • Lava Spitter: is a turret that spawns on the edge of the room. There are 6 possible spawn places. Each Lava Spitter has 1.300.000 health and shoots fire waves across the room (dodge them). When a Lava Spitter spawns move the boss to it so people can cleave it down. Rather then that ignore them until the add phase starts. After 30 seconds of being alive, the Lava Spitter gains a stacking debuff that increases the damage taken from melee abilities. Marking them as they spawn helps people know which one to DPS first when add phase starts.

Add Phase

At 70% and at 35% Ultane will become invulnerable and the add phase begins.

Abilities:

  • Demonic Hellspawns: as soon as Ultane goes invulnerable 2 Demonic Hellspawns will spawn from the gap in the wall (right across from the entrance). Each add has 5.800.000 health.
  • Wrath of Maelforge: Ultane will spam channel this ability causing red bubbles to spawn across the room. Move away from them as they deal 12.000 damage a tick. These bubbles also cause the Demonic Hellspawns to gain a stacking debuff that increases damage taken.
  • Soul Shackle: in the second add phase (at 30%) this mechanic will also occur.

When the add phase starts the first thing to go down are the Lava Spitters. The faster they die the easier the phase gets. The Demonic Hellspawns need time to build up their damage debuff so start by focusing on the turrets and not the adds. To stack the damage debuff on the adds they will have to be hit by the red bubbles. Getting them debuffed is the tank’s job. Once the Lava Spitters are down, switch to the adds. When the adds die Ultane becomes active again.

Once you learn to stand still in the circles and to dodge the waves, the fight becomes easy until the 35% mark. At 35% the room will shrink (a fire ring will cover the edge of the room). One minute into the last phase the room will shrink once more. If you can keep calm in the last 20% then you will down him easily.

Under 20% when the room is the smallest and there are 4-5 Lava Spitters up people start to step out of the circles and that is the main cause of raid wipes. Taking a wave is better then stepping out of the circle. Also not all the Lava Spitters are going to shoot out at the same time. Look at the warning paths and try to remember in which order to dodge them.

Unless your DPS has pre-SL gear you won’t have issues with the enrage timer. There is no need to go max dps in the last bit. It’s more important to focus on staying alive and dodging waves without debuffing the raid by stepping out of the circles.

If to many people become trapped in a circle (due to Soul Shackle) have them position at the edge of the circle. When it breaks, some of them have the chance to escape. The waves are targeted at a player, so if everyone is in the same spot (trapped inside a circle) then you won’t be able to dodge very well. Staying spread out is important.

Raiding Defiler Guide

Introduction

Defiler is the newest soul for clerics with the release of Storm Legion. The primary purpose of the Defiler is to intercept damage from tanks (effectively providing extra mitigation), and keep them alive with exceptional burst healing. Defiler is also capable of pulling the highest DPS of any healing soul in Rift. The Defiler is a staple role for most raid content, though you won’t need more than one in a raid. It is also arguably the most complicated role out of cleric healing options, with a full DoT-based DPS rotation in addition to its healing abilities.

While I intend for this guide to be suitable for players completely new to the Defiler soul, I do not recommend Defiler as a dungeon healing spec for fresh level 60s. Defiler has several issues, including limited AoE healing, expensive mana costs and lack of AoE cleanse. At entry gear levels you will find it almost impossible to cope with party members failing mechanics, extended fights resulting from underperforming or dead DPS, or party members accidentally pulling additional mobs. In a nutshell, everything you can expect to happen in your average LFG dungeon. You will not see the DPS advantage of Defiler unless you can rely on your party to not to put unnecessary healing pressure on you. Sentinel and Purifier are much better healing souls for players who have just started gearing up through dungeons.

Concepts

There are three key features to Defiler which makes the soul unique: Links, Husk and Foul Growth. The links are fairly straightforward to understand – you apply a link to someone in your party or raid and you will then intercept a percentage of damage that they would take. A Defiler has up to four different links available, in 30%, 20%, 10% and 5% flavours. Each size of link can only be applied to one person (so you can link up to four people). On top of this, the Defiler shares an automatic 50% link with its Beacon of Despair pet.

Bear in mind that as a Defiler you are intercepting damage from other players. This means you’re going to be taking more damage than you usually would. Don’t worry though! You can mitigate this intercepted damage with your Husk of Indifference, a self-shield that absorbs damage you take from your links. This is kind of like a Purifier shield, except it will only absorb link damage. With points in Cardial Conversion in the Defiler soul tree, your Husk will be automatically re-applied whenever you use one of your healing abilities, so you should end up not taking any additional damage to your health pool if you play correctly.

The last concept to understand is what Defiler uses to power its burst healing abilities: Foul Growths. The most basic way of thinking of Foul Growths is that they operate a bit like combo points on each of your links. The Rampant Growth trait in the Defiler tree makes it so that whenever you cast one of your damaging abilities, you have a chance to build a stack of Foul Growth on your linked targets. Once you build up Foul Growths, you will use your other healing abilities to detonate them for huge amounts of healing.

 

Defiler Specs

Defiler is reasonably flexible with its offsouls depending on what you want to be able to do. As a brief overview:

  • Sentinel: +Spellpower, +Healing
  • Inquisitor: +Spellpower, +Damage, Vex/Sanction Heretic, Armor of Devotion, Purge
  • Cabalist: +Wisdom, +Damage, Curse of Discord, Dark Water, Dark Passage (blink)
  • Warden: +Healing/Damage, Tidal Surge
  • Justicar: +HP/Survivability

For progression raiding, I recommend one of two options: Sentinel/Inquisitor or Justicar/Inquisitor (possibly Justicar/Sentinel for extremely low gear levels). Which of these options you use is dependent on how good your gear is, and whether or not you have enough HP to survive unavoidable raid damage. The most important thing to bear in mind as a Defiler is that you cannot afford to die. If you die, the tanks are probably also going to die and the raid will wipe. As such, you should not be afraid to stack some additional Endurance (HP) during progression in order to be safe.

The Defiler spec you want to use for most progression situations is 61 Defiler/9 Inquisitor/6 Sentinel (I will refer to this as the Standard Spec). 20% additional spellpower gives you incredible scaling as you acquire more gear, and Healer’s Blessing adds an extra ~1.2k to all healing abilities (except Feedback). If you need to have a purge, take 3 points out of Sentinel and put them in Inquisitor.

If you are entering a new tier of content and feel undergeared, it’s perfectly viable to take a few points in Justicar. You’re sacrificing a bit of healing/damage by doing so, but it’s better than dying.

Survivability Spec

Once you are comfortable that you can do your job on a fight, the option opens up to sacrifice a bit of survivability (i.e. husk size) in order to net pull higher DPS numbers. The main spec for this utilises Cabalist for its Dark Water ability.

Dark Water Spec  for single/two target DPS  (particularly on fights that are not melee friendly)

The Dark Water spec takes advantage of  the significant DPS returns from an 8- to 10-point investment in the Cabalist soul. From Cabalist you’ll pick up Curse of Discord (essentially another Vex) and most importantly Dark Water (as you might expect). Dark Water, and specifically its DoT component Darkness, is unique in that it can be stacked up to 3 times. Maintaining Darkness at 3 stacks is a significant damage source, and is what pulls this spec ahead of the Standard Spec (which deals more damage otherwise due to its 20% increased Spellpower).

Tidal Surge Spec  for melee friendly encounters with multiple targets

The Tidal Surge spec is the most situational of all Defiler specs. The highlight of this spec is being able to use Tidal Surge -> Unholy Nexus -> Pain Transmission for huge burst damage. Unholy Nexus does not consume Tidal Surge but applies the damage bonus to all DoTs that are spread, leaving the 50% damage increase to apply to Pain Transmission. The caveat is that this spec is only going to outperform other Defiler specs if you can take advantage of the bonus to both abilities; that is, you need a cleaving fight where you have a relevant target to spread dots to/from, and where you can take advantage of 4-6 Pain Transmission sources (i.e. melee friendly fight). The best examples of when to use this are Matriarch in EE and Twins in FT (if using 2 tanks). With the emergence of the Dark Water spec, this spec is generally not worth carrying (I’m just leaving this section in for completeness).

If you can only afford to carry one spec, take the Standard one (or Purge if your raid lacks people willing to play Inquisitor or Marksman). This gives you the best flexibility and most survivability for raiding.

Bond of Torment – Causes damaging abilities to heal you for a miniscule amount (just use Hideous Reconstuction on yourself)
Blighted Greed – Gain the benefits of your Blight buffs without having any links up
Husk of Indifference – This is automatically applied by any of your healing abilities, no need to cast it

 

Addons

You will want 2 addons in order to play Defiler optimally, because you have a lot of abilities and responsibilities to juggle to get the most out of the soul.

DefilerFG – Keeps track of your links and how many stacks of Foul Growth they have. This addon is necessary to get the most out of Defiler!
KaruulAlert – Use this to keep track of your DoTs and cooldowns, to minimise the amount of time you have to spend thinking about your DPS rotation. Also useful to alert you about boss mechanics that require immediate reaction, because a dead Defiler = raid wipe in many situations.

Defiler Rotation

Before the pull: Manually cast Foul Growth 3x and Hideous Reconstruction on the starting tank. Cast Bond of Pain on the boss (this will not cause him to aggro). Marrow Harvest also won’t deal any threat until it detonates, so cast it immediately as the tank pulls to apply Tenebrious Distortion.

General DPS priority:

This is an overarching list for all Defiler specs. You won’t have all of these abilities, but this will help you rank importance for whichever you decide to use.

  1. Marrow Harvest (only if Tenebrious Distortion debuff not active)
  2. Pain Transmission
  3. Darkness (3 stacks)
  4. Bond of Pain (assuming you are taking some form of damage)
  5. Vex
  6. Siphon Vitality
  7. Curse of Discord
  8. Sanction Heretic / Dehydrate
  9. Marrow Harvest (if Tenebrious Distortion is already active)
  10. Somatic Desecration
  11. Dark Water (instant cast while moving)

One of the key things you’ll notice from this list is how Marrow Harvest appears twice – once at the top and again near the bottom. This is because of the debuff MH applies – Tenebrious Distortion. This increases non-physical damage taken by the target by 5% for 30 seconds, and will spread to any target you spread Marrow Harvest to via Unholy Nexus. In a raid environment you want to make sure you apply this debuff ASAP. Note that this debuff is the same as Clinging Spirit (Inquisitor) and Sigil of Spirits (Cabalist). If you notice this debuff suddenly disappearing from your target, it’s because Inquisitors automatically apply Clinging Spirit whenever they cast Bolt of Depravity or Soul Drain.

When using your DoT spells, you do not want to refresh them before they expire. The Karuul alerts I recommend for Defiler will show you what’s missing from your target for easy reference as to what ability you should use next. The only exception to this rule is Dark Water, or more specifically its DoT component Darkness. You want to stack Darkness 3 times on your primary target, and refresh these stacks when their remaining duration reaches 2 seconds or less. Bear in mind that Dark Water has a travel time, and if you’re at max range can take a second to reach your target. Getting used to doing this may take some time, but the DPS payoff is really worth it.

For multi-target fights you will use BoP -> MH -> SV -> Unholy Nexus to spread DoTs. Maintain Darkness stacks on your primary (and possibly secondary) target if playing the Dark Water Spec. Use Pain Transmission whenever it’s off cooldown, and then focus on applying Vex individually to as many targets as you can before you have to refresh/spread SV/MH/BoP again.

Most of the Defiler’s abilities are instant cast with no cooldown, so unfortunately you can’t save much hotbar space with macros. I use the following spam macro for filler:

Siphon Vitality is at the bottom of this macro because there are no better spam options while moving – it deals its first tick of damage on application and refreshes your husk. Generally you should refresh your other DoTs if you’re forced to run for an extended period of time (e.g. Salvarola).

Healing

This is the aspect of Defiler that many people dismiss because it can be quite mana-intensive, is subject to RNG, and pretty much requires an add-on (DefilerFG) if you want to be able to do it properly. It also requires you to become familiar with every fight because the healing is based on pre-emptive decisions and knowledge of how safe your tank is at various health percentages.

On every fight you will go about building the majority of your Foul Growths simply by performing your DPS rotation. Each offensive spell you cast has a passive chance (60% on main tank, 40% on off-tank) of building a stack of Foul Growth, up to a maximum of three. You never want to cast the spell Foul Growth itself – it’s a huge waste of time for what it does. This randomness does have its drawbacks and I will discuss those and how to work around them a bit later on in this section.

In general, you don’t want to pop your Foul Growths if they’ll just be overhealing the tank. As long as the tank is over 80% health you should be fine just throwing Hideous Reconstruction on them, which will heal for 1500 per tick if you have the Defiler synergy crystal. This is the best cleric HoT in the game and it has the added bonus of refreshing your husk, so use it liberally.

Once a tank dips to between 50 to 70% HP you want to detonate your Foul Growths. If you are 100% confident that you will not need to heal the tank again for 10 seconds or so, you can pop Ghastly Restoration (which is off-GCD). However I would personally recommend not doing this and actually taking a GCD to heal with Loathsome Restoration. The interruption to your DPS rotation is fairly minimal and it means you reserve your emergency off-GCD heal in case the tank takes another huge hit immediately after you heal him. In situations where it is beneficial to heal both tanks with your FG stacks at the same time, you should use Feedback.

When a tank gets low (30% or less) you need to be quick to react. If you have at least 2 stacks of Foul Growth on them you should hit Loathsome Restoration, followed by Explosive Growth -> Ghastly Restoration. This should bring them back up to full health and is the reason why you save Ghastly Restoration. If the tank has 0 or 1 stack of FG you should immediately pop Unstable Transformation which activates god mode on them for 10 seconds.

So now let’s talk a bit more about Rampant Growth. This is a trait you pick up in the Defiler soul tree that enables you to passively build stacks of Foul Growth on your links while you DPS. This is where Defiler healing can become a bit unreliable in nature, and is why you need to use DefilerFG to track stacks of Foul Growth (since your Foul Growths will always accumulate at different rates dependent on RNG). There will be times where you get 3 stacks on both tanks within a few seconds, but also times where you may not get any stacks for an extended period of time (or have 3 stacks drop off because you didn’t manage to apply another stack for 10 seconds to refresh the timer). In situations where your luck is terrible you need to cast Explosive Growth on a tank before he takes heavy damage (for example when the tanks get frozen on Gelidra HM). Explosive Growth instantly loads your target up with 3 stacks of Foul Growth, but it’s very mana intensive and something you can’t afford to do all the time. This is where the real skill of Defiler comes into play: you must be able to predict tank damage. Learn when you can afford to DPS, and learn when you have to keep the tanks fully stacked without leaving it up to chance.

Putting it all together

When playing Defiler in a raid, you should default to your DPS rotation until enough tank damage occurs to warrant your attention. Make sure you always keep your husk up, usually by casting Siphon Vitality on an enemy or casting Hideous Reconstruction on one of the tanks (or yourself). If you are using a spec without 2 points in Pursuit of Truth (Inquisitor) you will suffer from casting pushback if your husk has been depleted, but you never want to be taking more damage to your health than necessary anyway.

Always keep an eye on your mana. It’s often a huge risk to recover from a large mana deficit as a Defiler because Empowered Affliction reduces your maximum health when used (stacking up to 25% reduction if cast in quick succession). Ideally you want to intersperse Empowered Affliction with your regular DPS rotation such that you’re only ever suffering a maximum of 5-10% reduced health at any given time. If you have to dip your health low for mana, make sure your Purifier knows to give you a Symbol shield. Always be sure to carry mana tonics – you will need them!

In the end, Defiler all comes down to experience. When first learning an encounter you probably want to be quite liberal with your applications of Explosive Growth to make sure your tanks are safe, and you may lose DPS because you need to regain mana with Empowered Affliction (be careful not to take your health down too low by casting it repeatedly). Try to find a good rhythm between using your damaging abilities, refreshing your husk, and regenerating mana as required.

Tips, Tricks and Other Notes

Handling your Beacon
In group content, your Beacon loses its primary purpose (tanking for you). However it is still a valuable source of DPS because it counts as a source for Pain Transmission damage. Since PT hits like a truck, having an extra source for its damage can be a nice boost to your DPS. That being said, the beacon can cause problems on some fights where it will take AoE damage and die (taking off a huge chunk of your health and sometimes killing you). Not all AoE affects pets, but that which does tends to kill the beacon fast. Experiment with the beacon on different fights and figure out where you can use it. Also use the following macro to instantly despawn the beacon if it’s in a precarious position.

Link Swapping
If you’ve played Defiler for any length of time, you’ve probably realised that once you have someone linked, you can’t change the size of link on that person. In order to get around this, it’s useful to make a macro that cancels your current links. This is also useful on Regulos in Endless Eclipse, where there will be 3 tanks rotating aggro on the boss, with 2 players tanking at any given time. You’ll have to rotate links as the tanks swap in and out, so being able to cancel and re-link as fast as possible is quite important.

Mouseover Healing
If you don’t like having to click to select a target before you cast a healing ability or cleanse, you can make mouseover macros so that you only have to hover over the raid frames while using the ability. This isn’t mandatory, but it makes it easier to keep the boss targeted so you can quickly switch back to dealing damage. You’ll need to make a macro for each individual ability (refer to the list earlier in this guide for ability names). Use the following format:
